Darc Night 2015

Thursday, 22 October, 2015

You may have heard about the new style of lighting design awards, the 'darc awards' which was brought to life by Mondo*arc Magazine in conjunction with Light Collective this year. Lucent Lighting was proud to be one of the sponsors of the event, which was held on the 24th September, 2015.

Sponsors were paired together in teams (manufacturer with lighting designer) and given the opportunity to create a light installation for the event using their products.

Lucent worked with Michael Grubb Studio (MGS) to create a 12 meter long installation titled 'The Source' for the back wall.

The concept stemmed from the idea of celebrating ‘more than the downlight’ with particular emphasis placed on integral lighting and a hand-crafted construction process. We CNC a pattern of scaling triangles which were cast out from the circular ‘Source’ in the centre of the installation.

The Source was inspired by the definition of Lucent; glowing with or giving off light ‘the moon was lucent in the background’. We then used Artex to create a landscape texture which was side illuminated by the entire Lucent ProStrip Black range in it’s various formats.

We individually addressed the LEDs and created an animation which tied together with a projection. Both teams from Michael Grubb Studio and Lucent worked as one to construct the light installation and wire the 112 triangles back to the DMX drivers.

Both teams enjoyed exploring ideas and solutions and were proud to create something new and different and finding a use for Artex was one of our proudest moments at Michael Grubb Studio.

After a frantic two-day set up, everyone was glad to finally be able to stand back, grab a glass of champagne and enjoy the awards ceremony.

Well done everyone for your amazing installations!

Lucent would also like to congratulate all the awards winners. This includes our installation team members Michael Grubb Studio for their work on the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin which placed 3rd in the 'Best Interior Lighting Project - High Budget' category. This project uses Lucent's ProSpex Pinhole Edge Accent fixtures with Xicato XSM 1300lm and ELDOLED DMX drivers.

Lucent's 25th Anniversary Party

Friday, 10 July, 2015

Lucent Lighting was born in 1990... To celebrate Lucent's first 25 years, we recently held a Neon 90's themed party! Lucent Director, Michael Dunk thanks all our loyal customers and staff and looks back on the last 25 years...

25 years on and Lucent Lighting is now stronger than ever with many loyal friends and customers who we have created some absolutely stunning and prestigious interiors with over the years.

"I'd like to thank all of our customers here, for helping make Lucent such a successful company but also we would like to thank our loyal staff members, some of whom have been with us since 1990, since we started the company" said director Michael Dunk in his speech at the party. "We'd also like to extend special thanks to Sharon and Martin from Light Collective, for organising this event and our marketing department for working so hard to make sure all of you are here."

During his speech, Michael looked back on the year 1990 when Lucent began...

"Now where were we all 25 years ago? Looking around the room, I guess most of you were either not conceived yet, or probably at school. Me, I was a disillusioned managing director of a lighting company, who wanted to start something on my own. 1990 was not a good year to start a business. Inflation was running at 10%, interest rates were 14%, uh… other interesting facts…

  • A gallon of petrol was £1.86, so for those of you who don’t know gallons, that’s about 40p a litre.
  • The recent house price was £73,000
  • The number 1 song this week in the charts was Sacrifice by Elton John.
  • The number 1 film this year was Ghost
  • Margaret Thatcher resigned in 1990… there’s a tear everywhere I suppose…
  • Nelson Mandela was released in March 1990
  • Desert Shields, the first invasion of Iraq was in 1990, and where did that get us now, you know?
  • Channel Tunnel – All the work was met in the middle. They knocked a hole in the wall and shook hands.
  • We had the first in car navigation systems in 1990
  • And mobile phones were a small suitcase you used to carry around on your shoulder."

Michael's speech really put things into perspective about how times have changed since he began Lucent, but that wasn't the only thing that emphasised the past...

At the event, Lucent staff members decided to identify themselves to guests by wearing a pink Lucent badge (see the image below). This badge has an image of a man on it. How many of you recognise this man? Yes, it is in fact Michael Dunk himself back in 1979, back when he was still new to the lighting industry!

Lucent staff are very proud to be a part of such an inspiring company and we all wore these badges to express our unity. Michael also spoke fondly of his staff members, referring back to the recent article in mondo*arc titled "It's a Family Affair". Here is what Michael said:

"Lucent is very much a family affair. Valerie and I are still very involved in the day to day running of the business but we also have our son James who runs business development, and Lucie our daughter heading up export including our North American division but it doesn’t stop there, we like to think our colleagues at Lucent are also family. Jackie, originally started as our nanny for Lucie, but has been with us since the inception of the company and now runs our warehouse." "Marco, was part of the family since growing up. He began straight out of school in our warehouse. He is, and I hope all of you know him, he is our sales director, so if he’s not calling on you, then there’s something wrong. Now Gary, our technical Director – 16 years with the company, I think I’m right in saying, and I think we rescued him from a shed or an attic somewhere in Muswell Hill and it’s only his second job. Now we call Neil, "Boomerang" - Applications Manager, he’s been with us for 14 years, on and off. More off than on, or what would you say Neil?"

Michael then continued with a slight marketing spin on his speech - it had to happen at some point! He spoke of Lucent's many achievements and again expressed his gratitude towards all of you, our customers and guests (both standing in front of him as well as those of you who couldn't make it to the party).

"I feel very proud of our achievements. How a small company from North London has managed to become the preferred supplier to so many high end retail brands, globally. Brands such as Tiffany, Van Cleef, Dior, Chanel, Burberry, Ralph Lauren and Mulberry, just to name a few. With stores supplied as far afield as the USA, Russia, China, Dubai, Hong Kong, Paris, Milan etc. We’ve also supplied many of the newly opened hotels in the last year. In London alone we’ve got the Shangri La, which was designed by Light Directions from Hong Kong, the Mondrian that was designed by Isometrix, Rosewood – Arclite New York, Ham Yard – Lighting Design International, The Beaumont – IlluminationWorks, The Bulgari with Metis Milan and the Marriot County Hall with Electra. We are represented internationally in 43 countries. We have in the past 18 months opened Lucent North America, which is based in New York. None of this could have been achieved without the support of you, our customers and you, our fantastic staff. It’s very exciting stuff and we are looking forward to what the future holds."

Overall, I think it is fair to say that we all had a great evening and Lucent would like to thank everyone for coming, including our visitors from India, France and the USA who made an extra effort to join us and we hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as we did!

Thanks for all your lovely messages and drawings on the the graffiti wall - we have saved the wall and it will soon be displayed in our showroom!

Also, one last big thanks to everyone who uploaded their awesome photos of the event on social media and tagged them with the #Lucent25 tag! It was great to see all your creative shots - especially of the UV Slinkys.
